Tips on Lowering Swimming Anxiety

A graduate of Michigan State University, Larry Gaynor donated $3 million to the school to build the Gaynor Entrepreneurship Center. In his free time, Larry Gaynor enjoys swimming to keep fit.

Research shows that more than 100 million Americans have a fear of being in water over their heads. However, swimming is a life-saving skill that everyone should learn. Here are a few steps to help combat your fear:

1. Enter the pool only when a lifeguard is in the vicinity.

2. Give yourself a pep talk. Positive words will help you feel more confident and relaxed.

3. Take small steps. Ease yourself into the process by dipping your feet into the water first. Take deep breaths. As you grow more relaxed, you can stand in shallow water, reaching your waist and, later on, your shoulder level.

4. Practice floating in the water. You can start off using an arm floater. Hold your shoulders back and keep your body flat, like you’re lying down on the water. Stay close to the wall at first, so you have no reason to panic.

5. After learning to float on your back, try holding your head underwater for a few moments at a time. Take the process step by step, and remember to breathe in between tries.
