An Overview of the Forgotten Harvest

An award-winning entrepreneur, Larry Gaynor is an accomplished business leader who has served as the president and CEO of TNG Worldwide for over three decades. Throughout his career, he received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1992, and TNG named a Detroit Free Press Top Workplace for five consecutive years; 2013-2017. Larry Gaynor supports various community organizations, including Forgotten Harvest.

Forgotten Harvest focuses on dealing with both hunger and waste. Operating within the larger Detroit metro area, the organization has rescued food surpluses from restaurants, markets, grocery stores, and caterers to donate to local emergency food providers. By donating food, Forgotten Harvest prevents food that could have been wasted to reach Detroit families, which are food insecure and struggling to cater to life’s most basic necessities.

To meet its mandate, Forgotten Harvest has an On-the-Go Mobile Pantry Program whose mission is to distribute food to under-served and high-poverty neighborhoods that don’t have access to permanent emergency food distribution centers. Under the program, there are 68 regular mobile pantry sites spread across Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb Counties that receive rescued food that is fresh and healthy.

Every site serves between 250-270 families. The program engages mobile services at sites that lack a permanent pantry partner or plans to test the viability of a long-term site. Forgotten Harvest selects new sites based on the results of the food security index, which is a joint effort with Data Driven Detroit. Areas with a dark green shade are those with higher levels of food insecurity.
