Outside of his work with TNG, Larry Gaynor actively raises money for the American Cancer Society (ACS), a nationwide health organization focused on eliminating cancer as a health problem.
ACS regularly undertakes research relating to cancer and releases guidelines regarding general health. According to the organization’s Guideline for Diet and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention, not drinking alcohol is one way of avoiding different cancers. An ACS study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology supports this recommendation, having found that alcohol consumption was linked to cancer diagnoses and deaths throughout the United States.
The study examined cancer diagnoses and deaths each year between 2013 and 2016. The findings showed that 75,000 new cancer diagnoses a year were tied to alcohol consumption, as were nearly 19,000 deaths. In the United States, Delaware had the highest proportion of new cancer diagnoses linked to alcohol. Alaska, Nevada, Colorado, New Hampshire, and the District of Columbia had over 6 percent of new cancer cases linked with alcohol consumption.
Researchers also looked at the most common types of cancer linked to drinking alcohol. Nearly 50 percent of mouth and throat cancers in most states were related to drinking alcohol. Following that, around 30 percent of laryngeal cancers were related to alcohol consumption, along with 12 percent of breast cancers.
